“STATEN ISLAND HOLOCAUST CENTER ACQUIRES NUREMBERG TRIAL ITEMS”
The Staten Island Holocaust Center announced the donation of several items from the Nuremberg Trials by Bob Lurie. These authentic artifacts were collected by his late father Simon “Si” Lurie while serving in World War II.
The trial of Nazi leaders for war crimes took place in Nuremberg, Germany between November 1945 and October 1946. Si Lurie, formerly of Ward Hill, was stationed in Europe during the war and was on active duty when he attended the trial. He retained programs, a ticket and other items from that event, which his son has donated for display.
“The Staten Island Holocaust Center is committed to serving as a repository for personal items retained by Holocaust survivors, and those who served in the European theatre for display in an appropriate educational setting. This donation from the Lurie family is the type memorabilia we are seeking to preserve” stated Hon. Philip S. Straniere, Board Chair.
“We are actively looking to record the stories of survivors and GIs who liberated the concentration camps and to acquire for display any personal property in the hands of Staten Islanders that can add to the educational mission of the SIHC” said Rachel Borenstein, the daughter of a survivor and President of the Staten Island Holocaust Center.
The Staten Island Holocaust Center (SIHC) is a 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to ensuring that the Holocaust is “never forgotten.” Through exhibits and special programs, SIHC will serve as an education center that commemorates the individual stories of those personally impacted by the Holocaust, preserves and interprets objects from that time, and combats anti-Semitism and all forms of prejudice. In addition, to acquiring items from survivor families and service personnel, the SIHC will feature displays about the history of the Jewish Community on Staten Island.
